Benefits of Custom Club fitting

From body size, strength, shape and swing, every golfer is different, and most golfers today know
that golf clubs can produce their optimum results only when they have been custom fit to the needs
and abilities of the individual golfer.

Off-the-shelf golf clubs are one-size-fits-all, designed for the "typical" golfer. A golfer might get lucky
with an off-the-shelf set, but many golfers find themselves ill suited to these sets. In these cases, a
professional custom clubfitter can change the way a golf club will affect a player’s distance,
accuracy, trajectory, backspin and feel.

Distance
Distance is the most often sought after performance enhancement. After all, no one complains they
hit the ball too far. A key consideration effecting distance is a clubhead’s loft, the angle in degrees
between a plane that intersects the center of the clubface and a vertical plane which is perpendicular
to the sole line. In addition to distance, loft influences accuracy, trajectory, backspin and feel.

Typically, greater loft angles create higher ball flight and shorter distances. Clubs with lesser loft
angles generate greater distance and lower trajectory in ball flight.

Club length is another major influence on distance. Increasing the length of the middle and short
irons will result in greater distance for nearly all golfers because se the shorter clubs are easier to
swing overall. However, increasing the length of woods or longer irons usually only benefits skilled
players because these clubs become more difficult for an average player to hit the ball solidly.

Accuracy
While there are not many club specifications that directly impact accuracy, club length does play a
strong role.

Every golfer possesses a certain length at which the club magically synchronizes with the natural
timing of the golfer’s body, and the golfer is able to produce a fairly consistent swing.

Longer golf clubs are more difficult to hit consistently for less skilled players because the greater
length places the clubhead’s mass farther away from the golfer’s body. This results in the club
feeling too unwieldy for the golfer to strike the ball accurately.

The clubhead's lie angle — the angle between the center of the shaft and the sole — also comes into
play for accuracy, particularly in the shorter irons. The lie angle is considered to be just right for the
golfer when the sole arrives at impact perfectly parallel to the ground. If the lie angle does not ‘fit’ the
golfer, and the club’s toe is tilted up in relation to the heel, the face will automatically point to the
hook side of the target line. Thus, the greater the loft, the more off-line the face will point when the lie
angle is incorrect for the golfer.

Trajectory
Trajectory is heavily influenced by the club’s loft and by the make-up of the entire set of clubs. While
some players want higher trajectory, others seek to hit the ball lower. In either case, a professional
clubfitter can make a noticeable increase or decrease in trajectory by increasing the loft angle of the
golfer’s clubs. However, changes in trajectory will also impact distance.

A professional clubfitter can balance out this ‘give-and-take’ between trajectory and distance with
carefully planned set make-up. By increasing the loft of the driver, and replacing long irons and some
middle irons with high-lofted fairway woods, a clubfitter can typically provide a golfer with better
trajectory without a loss of distance.

Backspin
Backspin is closely related to trajectory and is mainly influenced through loft angle. Players who seek
to stop more balls on the green can do so by custom fitting their clubs to create more backspin.
These adjustments usually involve the short irons and wedges and occasionally the fairway woods or
long irons. Generally speaking, the higher the shot, the greater the ball’s backspin.

Feel
Feel is hard to define because it is such a unique perception to each individual golfer. Feel can be
affected by the club’s total weight, design, swing weight, head weight, shaft weight, grip size, grip
weight or even the shaft’s kick point, torque or flex. Clubs which ‘feel good’ to a golfer are a huge
plus and can usually only be achieved by either having a lot of luck with an off-the-rack set or with a
little time with a professional clubfitter.

Properly fit custom clubs are tailored to accommodate a player’s individual swing characteristics and
strengths, and the owners and staff members of Performance Fitting Centers are certified to have the
best education for professional custom clubfitting. In addition, PFC’s have exclusive access to True
Temper’s Tour Only products and club fitting resources such as True Temper’s online fitting system
